Couples Therapy: Lack of Emotional Connection

Clients:

Jacob (46, manager)
Mia (42, teacher)
Together 12 years; two children, aged 5 & 7.

Issue:

Both Jacob and Mia felt their relationship had drifted, and that they were no longer in love. They wanted to try and rekindle what they had before.

How R&L Helped:

Robertson & Ling completed individual assessments and intake with Jacob and Mia to get each of their perspectives on the relationship. Both Jacob and Mia appreciated the opportunity to “share their side of the story.”

The Robertson & Ling counsellor then focused on interventions that assisted the couple to build connection and closeness within the relationship. These interventions took into account the busyness and time constraints that come with family life. The counsellor adeptly helped the couple to explore and understand what had changed in their relationship, and to anticipate barriers as they sought to reestablish their closeness and connection.

After four months, Jacob and Mia had noticed the difference these interventions had made to their relationship. They felt like they understood the other person’s world for the first time in years, and genuinely enjoyed each other’s company again. They decided that they would see their Robertson & Ling counsellor every few months for a “check-up” appointment to make sure they were still tracking well.
