Couples Therapy &
Relationship Counselling - Recommendations

Couple attending couples therapy

We want you to get the most out of your experience at Robertson & Ling. Here are some things to keep in mind about the couples therapy and relationship counselling process:

  • Your therapist will often advise working on certain interventions and strategies between sessions. We see the best results when couples are willing to do this.

  • Throughout couples therapy and relationship counselling, it may become apparent that you or your partner require individual support of some kind. For examplecouples therapy or marriage counselling following a betrayal may require individual psychological assistance. Your counselor will discuss this with you as needed.

  • Consider frequent appointments early on. Most couples want issues resolved as quickly as possible - which is understandable! We recommend weekly appointments at a minimum, and even a few appointments a week if you can manage it.

  • We are able to have 90 minute sessions - it can be good to have a little longer to work through issues. Please discuss these with your therapist at any point.

  • At times, couples therapy and marriage counselling may feel challenging. Don't lose heart - it's common for there to be some bumpy moments when issues are being raised and worked through.

  • Lastly, and most importantly - well done for seeking relationship counselling or couples therapy. Your courage, vulnerability and commitment in attending should not be underestimated.
