Case Study: Parenting
Clients:
Steven (33, IT consultant)
Ruby (31, nurse)
Issue:
Not knowing what to do with their son Noah's (6) difficult behaviour, particularly his hitting and tantrums. Both parents found it hard to remain calm when Noah seemed out of control, but this only exacerbated the issue. They also noted that bedtimes and getting ready to leave the house were a real challenge. Nothing they tried seemed to be working.
How R&L Helped:
Their R&L counsellor worked with them on strategies for responding to Noah's emotions, and how to handle unacceptable behaviour. They also worked on family routines, as well as ways for both of them to improve their own emotional regulation when things were feeling out of control.
Both Ruby and Steven found these sessions very helpful. After a few months they felt like the situation had improved significantly, and that they now had the tools and strategies in place to parent effectively.
