Case Study: Family Therapy
Clients:
Chloe (44, marine biologist)
Julian (48, teacher)
Seb (16)
Issue:
Both Chloe and Julian are finding it increasingly difficult to deal with Seb's behaviour. They also feel like they have completely lost connection with him. Seb finds his parents annoying and intrusive.
How R&L Helped:
To begin with, the Robertson & Ling counsellor conducted individual intake and assessment sessions. This enabled them to gain a thorough understanding of each person's perspective of the family dynamics.
The R&L counsellor used a number of interventions with the family to increase their level of understanding of one another. They also assisted the family in their communication skills, particularly around conflictual issues that may arise in family life.
Finally, the counsellor worked with Chloe and Julian on their parenting. Specifically, they helped them set reasonable expectations and boundaries for Seb, and established how best to respond to any of his challenging behaviours and emotions.
After six sessions, the family felt like they were able to discuss issues in a far healthier manner. Chloe and Julian also felt well equipped to parent their teenage son in a way that was not only effective, but that also maintained their connection with him.
