Couples Therapy - Betrayal
Clients:
George (44, HR manager)
Annabelle (40, lawyer)
Two children, 15 & 12; together 17 years
Issue:
Relational distress following a betrayal. George had engaged in a brief physical affair the previous year. The couple had tried to process and move forward from the affair but to no avail - it felt like the betrayal was infecting every part of their lives.
How R&L Helped:
To begin with, the Robertson & Ling couples counsellor conducted individual intake and assessment sessions, to gain a thorough understanding of each person's perspective of the relationship and the impact of the betrayal.
The counsellor then used the Gottman Clinical Method to help the couple process and tackle the betrayal head on. Tools and strong guidance in sessions gave Annabelle and George the process and support to rebuild trust and connection. With the counsellor’s assistance, they also developed the capacity to have healthier conversations about conflictual - whether about the betrayal or other issues.
After six months, Annabelle and George felt that things had improved significantly in their relationship. They also felt that they now had the communicative tools to work through future issues confidently, and in a way that kept them connected and close.
