Couples Therapy: Trust Issues
Client(s):
Ben (48, surgeon)
Chris (41, landscaper)
Together two years.
Issue:
Ben feels that his trust of Chris has been broken. He has caught Chris lying about his use of money. He has also claimed to have been at work when actually with his friends. Ben is considering leaving the relationship.
How R&L Helped:
To begin with, the Robertson & Ling relationship counsellor conducted individual intake and assessment sessions, to gain thorough understanding of each person's perspective of the relationship generally, as well as the trust issues.
The counsellor then used key strategies and interventions to assist the couple to rebuild trust within the relationship. They also focused on helping Ben and Chris to establish a deeper connection within the relationship, and provided them with the necessary tools for healthier conversations around conflictual issues (such as use of finances). These interventions were not just designed to rebuild trust, but to prevent any erosion of trust in the future.
After a number of months, Ben felt that he could once again trust Chris, and felt that the right strategies were in place to address any concerns if they were to arise down the track.
